HUNTSVILLE --(February 2, 2006) The Huntsville Police Department's bomb squad took the state's top ranking with its robot,  at the Alabama Robot Rodeo Championship for law enforcement in Birmingham.

Sgt. Burnie Stedham said all seven members of the team usually take turns operating the remote-controlled Mini-Andros II, but Officer Rob Bingham was at the controls to win each of four races to test skill and speed.

The team has participated in the competition between about a dozen teams for two out of the past three years and has taken first place both times.

Stedham said he is proud of that accomplishment because the team uses an older, smaller robot than most departments.

The robot has drab green paint, bright orange fiber-optics cable and three video cameras to help officers retrieve explosive devices. It can unscrew the top off a bottle, pour the contents into a cup, and return it to the operator.
