 Child abuse is the willful mistreatment of a child by his or her parents, relatives or guardian. Child abuse is violence to children which includes physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse or neglect. Child sexual and physical abuse is not limited to the family structure. These types of crimes are often committed by acquaintances of the victim, through organizations outside the family such as date rape, abuse occurring at day care centers, schools, churches, boy's clubs, girl's clubs or even in your own neighborhood. The following agencies can provide you with services or information regarding child abuse. If you are a victim or know a child that might be a victim, call one of the following agencies: The Huntsville Police Department at 256-722-7100. at 256-535-4500 during the day, or after hours at 256-534-4950. Both the National Children's Advocacy Center and the National Resource Center on Child Abuse are located in Huntsville. They may be contacted at 256-533-5437. The Children's Center provides a neutral setting for joint interviews of the victim by law enforcement investigators and Department of Human Resources social workers. The center also has an in-house therapist that deals solely with child abuse. You may also call SCAN (Stop Child Abuse and Neglect) which can be contacted at Hope Place, Incorporated, a shelter for battered spouses, may be a point of contact and can provide information by calling 256-716-1000.
