Huntsville Police Academy Graduates Twenty-three Cadets

Huntsville, Alabama (September 7, 2007) Huntsville Mayor Loretta Spencer will administer the Oath of Office to 23 Cadets who have just completed 18 weeks of rigorous training at the Huntsville Police Academy. Starting next week, they will hit the streets for 14 weeks with experienced Field Training Officers for their next phase of police training.

The 48th Session represents a diverse group of men and women with a combined total of 109 years of military service. The oldest cadet is 44-years-old who recently retired as a Navy Officer. Another female cadet is a native of the Ukraine, who gained citizenship in January and speaks three languages.

This will be the first graduating class under recently appointed Police Chief Henry Reyes. Reyes, who was formally the Director of Police Training several years ago said the Department has always taken pride in recruiting the best possible candidates with a variety of education and military experiences. He said, “The fact that many military personnel chose the Huntsville Police Department is indicative of our extensive recruiting efforts. We will continue to recruit for prior active military and reserve forces, to include minorities and women to ensure we have the diversity that reflects the community we serve.” Reyes added that three cadets who would be graduating today were activated with their units to serve overseas in Iraq or Afghanistan. They will return to Huntsville to join the next Academy now scheduled for the spring of 2008.

Huntsville’s newly appointed Public Safety Director, Rex Reynolds will be the commencement speaker. His message to the cadets will be about commitment, leadership, professionalism and service to the community.

The Huntsville Police Department is now taking applications until October 16, 2007 for the next Academy. Starting salary is $34,944 - $53,331. Additional information can be obtained by visiting our website at www.hsvpolice.com or contact the Police Academy at (256) 746-4409.
