Sixty-eight Arrested for DUI Under State Funded Grant
Huntsville, Alabama (September 12, 2007) Huntsville Police Department’s DUI Task Force has just completed a state funded grant to pay Officers overtime to set up checkpoints. From August 17th through September 1st and Labor Day, a total of sixty-eight people were charged with Driving Under the Influence and 102 traffic citations were issued to motorists. Thirty-eight citations were for no vehicle insurance and 31 people were cited for driving without a license or a revoked license. The grant is from the North Alabama Highway Safety Office that allows Officers to target impaired drivers and increase deterrence with high visibility checkpoints.
DUI Task Force supervisor, Sgt. Floyd Smith said they will set up additional non-funded grant checkpoints September 15th, 16th and the 21st. The checkpoints will run from 11:00 p.m. through 3:00 a.m. Some of the locations are Drake Avenue/ Penny Street, Holmes Avenue/Jefferson Street, Whitesburg Drive/Teakwood, Sparkman Drive/Executive and Mastin Lake/Pulaski Pike.
