Huntsville Police Prepare for Rocket City Marathon
Huntsville, Alabama (December 10, 2008)
More than 2,500 people are
expected to participate and watch the Rocket City Marathon this Saturday,
December 13, 2008. Chief Henry Reyes said it’s the largest event in the city and
requires numerous officers and multiple road closings to keep runners safe.
Reyes said motorists should obey all Police Officers and Public Safety Aides who
will direct traffic at intersections along the route. Because of the length of
the route, there will only be a few posted barricades. The course consists of a
downtown loop approximately two and a half miles circling through portions of
the business district and the two historic districts ending at Lowe Avenue near
the Holiday Inn Select. The Marathon begins at 8:00 a.m. and is expected to end
at 2:00 p.m. Chief Reyes said motorists should try to avoid traveling along
Airport Road and Governor’s Drive near Huntsville Hospital as much as possible
during these hours and use alternate routes like Weatherly Road, Drake Avenue
and Bob Wallace to get to their destinations. For more specific information,
