DUI Campaign
Huntsville, Alabama (September 09, 2008) The Huntsville Police Department announced today that the Northeast Alabama Traffic Safety Office (NATSO) has awarded the department an additional grant to continue the “Drunk Driving, Over the Limit, Under Arrest” campaign through September 15, 2008. This award, in recognition of the Huntsville Police Department’s outstanding efforts to interdict the impaired driver, will allow uniform police officers and the department’s DUI Task Force to set up checkpoints and other enforcement efforts.
The DUI Task Force will continue the DUI enforcement effort during this time by setting up checkpoints throughout Huntsville at announced and unannounced locations. Uniformed Patrol officers from each of the department’s three precincts will also participate by maintaining aggressive traffic enforcement activities at various NATSO “Hot Spot” locations.
“We are pleased that the outstanding efforts of our DUI Task Force officers and uniform patrol officers have resulted in this award. We will use these funds to continue our mission of aggressively seeking out and arresting those who decide to drive impaired”, said Sergeant Floyd Smith, supervisor of the DUI Task Force.
To date, the Huntsville Police have arrested over 1,200 offenders for DUI with the DUI Task Force accounting for over 1,000 of the total. Additionally, the DUI Task Force has written over 5,700 citations this year for a variety of traffic offenses, according to Sergeant Smith.
