Huntsville Police Fallen Officer Memorial
Huntsville, Alabama (September 23, 2009) The Huntsville Police Citizen’s Foundation welcomes the arrival of the statue for the Huntsville Police Fallen Officers’ Memorial. To kick off the arrival of the statue the Huntsville Track Club is donating $2,000 to the foundation. The money is a combination of a donation from the Track Club and proceeds from the Memorial Walk in May. The Huntsville Track Club made a donation of $7,500 last year and plans to continue supporting the memorial by hosting a Memorial Walk at the Cotton Row each year.
The larger-than-life bronze statue is the first phase of the Fallen Officers’ Memorial to be erected outside the Public Safety Complex on Wheeler Avenue. Even though the statue portion is complete, the memorial is nowhere near complete. The statue still needs a base and the surrounding benches to complete the memorial and the funding is just not there at this time. The statue will not be given a permanent home until the funds have been raised.
At present the foundation has raised $182,524 from both donations and sales. The biggest contributor to date is Mayfair Church of Christ with a donation of $21,150; closely followed by Intergraph Corporation and Boeing with $15,000 each. Other large contributors include Redstone Federal Credit Union and the Huntsville Track Club with $7,500 each, to name a few. For a complete listing you can go to the website at www.hsvcity.com/police under “honorable donations”.
The total cost of the memorial is approximately $400,000 so it is close to the halfway point. However; over $200,000 is still needed and the foundation is looking to the citizens and the businesses of Huntsville to complete this heartfelt memorial.
