Huntsville Police Announce Termination of Two Police Officers

Huntsville, Alabama (May 21, 2012)
The Huntsville Police Department announced today the termination of two Police Officers.

The first officer was involved in an incident that occurred in October 2011 during the arrest of a suspect.  This same officer was involved in a second incident that occurred in December 2011, which involved a traffic stop resulting in the arrest of the driver.  After the December incident, the officer was placed on Administrative Duty pending a full internal investigation and completion of any necessary disciplinary proceedings.  The officer was entitled to and received a full personnel hearing before an impartial hearing officer.  Based on the finding of fact made by that hearing officer, Chief Lewis Morris determined the officer’s actions violated Departmental Rules and Regulations and recommended termination.

The second officer was involved in a separate incident that occurred in December 2011 during the arrest and subsequent detention of a suspect.  Following the incident, the officer was placed on Administrative Duty pending a full internal investigation and completion of any necessary disciplinary proceedings.   The second officer also received a full personnel hearing before an impartial hearing officer.  Based on the finding of fact made by that hearing officer, Chief Lewis Morris determined that the officer’s actions violated Departmental Rules and Regulations and recommended termination.

City of Huntsville Personnel Policies and Procedures provides a process for an employee to appeal a termination.  Therefore, the Department will be unable to comment further at this time.
