A New School Year Means School Zone Safety

Huntsville, Alabama (August 16, 2013) Classes resume Monday, August 19, 2013 on a new school year for approximately 75 schools across the Huntsville area.  The Huntsville Police Department and Huntsville Police Chief Lewis Morris want to remind motorists of our annual campaign addressing school zone safety.  Huntsville Police Officers will have a presence within the school zones with a “Zero Tolerance” approach to traffic enforcement, specifically speeding within the zones.  We want to remind everyone to remember the posted speed limit in those zones at the posted times prior to and after school is 25 MPH.  Public Safety Aides will be present to direct traffic and assist pedestrians crossing roads at the designated crosswalk areas.

School Zone Safety and the safety of our children are the concern of not only the Huntsville Police Department, but of the entire community as well, and here is how you can help.  Motorists and pedestrians should allow for extra time due to traffic delays and congestion in and around school zones, and be familiar with locations of crosswalks and the Public Safety Aides.  Motorists should be alert, aware, and prepared for complete “STOPS” due to school buses, pedestrians, and directions from Public Safety Aides.  Finally, motorists and pedestrians need to remember to obey the hand signals of the Public Safety Aides who are working to protect our children and assist in traffic control.
