Citizen Assists in Robbery Arrest

Huntsville, Alabama (March 20, 2014) On March 19, 2014, Officers with the Huntsville Police Department, the Fugitive Task Force and members of the U.S. Marshals Service arrested Juan Lee Banks, 20 y/o, b/m, of Huntsville and charged him with Robbery 1st Business. The offender entered the Fast Stop Mini Mart around 1:30 p.m., located at the 4900 block of Meridian Street and demanded money. The offender then fled on foot without taking any property.

A citizen observed the offender fleeing from the store, notified police of the offender’s location, and continued to watch the offender until police arrived. The offender was located near Winchester Rd and Swaim Circle and taken into custody by HPD officers, the Fugitive Task Force and members of the U.S. Marshals Service, without incident. While the offender was fleeing, he was observed throwing down a 9mm pistol, which was recovered and turned into evidence.

This is a perfect example of local law enforcement and community policing at its best.  Without the help of this citizen, the arrest of the offender may not have occurred as quickly.  We encourage our citizens to participate in community policing by providing information and tips to our officers when they are able to do so.  The safety of our citizens is of utmost importance to our Department. With that in mind, we do ask for their assistance in observing and reporting any suspicious activities to our Department, not to engage any offenders, and to always keep a safe distance from the incident.
