Police Shoot Armed Suspect
(April 4, 2014) On April 4, 2014, at
approximately 1am, Huntsville Police Officers responded to a domestic
disturbance at 2014 Stanford Drive. The call originated from a neighbor stating
there was a fight in progress in the street. Officers arrived and tried to
question the suspect. The suspect fired a shotgun at officers, striking Officer
Jason Moore in the face and upper body area. Another officer on the scene was
able to return suppressive gunfire until other officers arrived. Officer Moore
was then evacuated from the scene by Officers until HEMSI arrived to transport
him to Huntsville Hospital. During this time, the suspect retreated inside his
residence and indiscriminately continued to fire on Officers.
The SWAT team arrived and was met with gunfire from the suspect. During the exchange of gunfire, the suspect was struck several times by returning fire and eventually died on the scene.
Officer Moore is in good condition at Huntsville Hospital after undergoing surgery for his injuries.
Whenever there is an incident involving Huntsville Police Officers firing their weapons an internal investigation is initiated by Internal Affairs Division to determine if the Officers’ actions were within departmental policy. This investigation culminates in an Incident Review Board that hears testimony regarding the incident. The Board is chaired by a Huntsville Police Captain, Lieutenant, and Sergeant along with representatives from the City Attorney’s Office and the Madison County District Attorney’s Office.
