Records Division of the Huntsville Police Department is an essential
part of the department’s every day function. The areas and
extensions of this division assist with the overall productivity of
the law enforcement process. The Records Division is a 24/7
operation and accessible to the public during regular business
hours. The support personnel in this area maintain and produce
police related documents for review by various entities. The
Records Division consists of two main areas: technical and
clerical. The Evidence Room and
Alarm Unit are an extension of the Records
Division and are located in the same facility.
technical area is comprised of the
Identification Section, and
is responsible for all tasks regarding examinations for
identification purposes. This area includes Fingerprint Technicians
and one Latent Examiner/Identification Supervisor. The clerical
area is mainly responsible for data entry and interacting with the
public. This area includes Records Clerks and three Records
Supervisors. The Evidence Room is responsible for securing
submitted evidence for court purposes and includes two property
custodians. The Alarm Unit is responsible for issuing
licenses/permits for securities and includes one alarm coordinator.
The Records Division maintains criminal history files on anyone arrested by the department, with a current total of 145,800 files. In addition, the section maintains all traffic accident reports (approximately 12,000 per year) and all crime reports, which number more than 24,000 a year and 18,000 arrest reports.
